Sly Man’s Bet of the Day

Method
When a horse in a six-furlong handicap at Ffos Las is steaming in the morning and has a trainer running at thirty-six percent over the last month, I stop looking for reasons to dismiss it and start looking for reasons to trust it. That is the read I keep coming back to with On Edge today. The engine scanned 27 races and 217 runners declared for 23 June 2026. Three filters shaped the universe: a decimal odds band of 2.0–50.0 (no odds-on, nothing longer than 49/1), field sizes of 6–14 runners only, and a weighted composite built from speed, form, class change, trainer strike rate, going, market move, and draw. The draw layer is not yet live — that feature is reserved for v2 — so every horse here is scored on six active dimensions rather than seven.
Today's universe
The race-state check left all 217 runners intact — no abandoned races, no early results. The odds filter trimmed that to 193, removing anything odds-on or beyond 50.0 decimal. The field-size cut brought it down to 162 qualified runners across the day's races: small fields pruned for noise, large fields pruned for chaos. Those 162 are what the composite model worked on.
The shortlist
Five horses separated themselves from the field. On Edge led at 7.13/10, with Outmaster second at 7.03/10, Regal Desire third at 6.83/10, Sequel Star fourth at 6.80/10, and Coolree fifth at 6.69/10. The gap between first and second is only ten basis points — I am not going to pretend otherwise — but it is the composition of On Edge's score that closes the argument. Outmaster carries two unavailable features (class change and going), which means its 7.03 is built on a narrower evidence base; the model is extrapolating where it has no data. Regal Desire steamered too, but trainer B Ellison is running at four percent over the last thirty days — a cold yard. Coolree is close and worth watching, but On Edge edges it on both speed rating and form. The market-move score was the tiebreaker across several horses, but the trainer signal is what pushed On Edge clear.
Why this horse
The case starts with the trainer. C Mason has sent out 4 from 11 over the last thirty days — a 36% strike rate — and the model scores that at +2.03 on a weight of 0.8. That is a hot yard by any measure, and hot yards do not go unnoticed by the market. The steamer signal — strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted — scores a further +2.00 on a weight of 1.2. Two of the model's strongest signals are pointing the same direction at the same time; that alignment matters more to me than any single number in isolation. The speed figure backs it up: an SR of 85 against a field mean of 75.4 gives a z-score of +1.03 on the highest-weighted feature in the model (weight 1.5). It is not a dominant speed advantage, but it is a genuine one. Form reads '2218-1' — the latest run a win, and the decay-weighted average comes out at +1.14, scoring +1.70 on form weight 1.2. This is a horse that has been placed consistently and found a way to win last time out. On going, it has gone 2-from-8 with seven placed runs on good or adjacent ground today — a positive if modest signal at +0.88. Class is flat: same Class 5 as last time, no change up or down. The composite lands at 7.13/10 — a solid score, not a thundering one, but built on four functioning features that all point the same way.
What worries me
The margin over Outmaster is thin — ten basis points — and I would be lying if I said the score-off was decisive on its own. Outmaster has a speed z-score of +1.31 and a form average of +2.00, both better than On Edge's equivalents; it is the missing going and class-change data that drag its composite down, and if those features would have scored positively, it closes or overtakes. Draw bias is unavailable for every runner here — if the draw matters at Ffos Las over six furlongs on good ground today, we have no model input on it. The 10/3 price reflects the steamer status; if the market has already fully priced the trainer form in, the value edge narrows. C Mason's 36% rate is over a short thirty-day window — eleven runners — so it is a hot spell, not a career pattern, and those can cool quickly.
