The Fox’s Wire · Methodology
How the algorithm finds today’s weakest favourite Lay of the Day
Not who wins. Who’s overpriced to.
Stage 01 · Universe
Every race. Every fav. Every day.
The lay pipeline opens against the same pool the Bet of the Day pipeline hunts. Nothing pre-filtered by course or class — the fade case has to earn its place, not slip through a smaller net.
Stage 02 · Eligibility
The first three filters.
Before scoring, races have to clear the hard rules. Small fields make favs structurally hard to beat; extreme prices make the market call irrelevant; a favourite the community has decisively pinned is off-limits.
- Field ≥ 7 runners — after scratchings, not before.
- Favourite price 1.5 – 5.0 — tighter than the lay minimum, so no odds-on obligations.
- Race live — not abandoned, not resulted, declared 48-hour runners only.
- Pin veto — skip a favourite that 3+ distinct Cubs have pinned (real community intelligence, not one voice).
Stage 03 · Find the favourite
Shortest price. Sole occupant.
For each surviving race, the pipeline reads the market and picks the shortest priced runner. Joint favourites — two runners tied at the top of the book — return no clean lay target and the race drops. No divided attention, no fudged decisions.
Stage 04 · Market vs Model
Where the market is wrong.
Every favourite gets two numbers: what the market’s implied probability says the horse wins, and what Sly Man’s model says. The gap between them is the lay signal — and it’s the number the whole product is built around.
Stage 05 · Weakness features
The seven axes, inverted.
The scorer reuses Bet of the Day’s seven feature plugins wholesale — class, form, trainer, going, speed, market move, draw — but reads each axis for the fade case: negative contributions become positive lay evidence.
- Class+0.55
- Form+0.32
- Trainer+0.18
- Going−0.10
- Speed+0.08
- Market move+0.24
- Draw−0.05
Positive values weaken the favourite — the axis is inverted so the fade case reads the same axes Bet of the Day reads for backing.
Stage 06 · Composite
One number: the weakness score.
The feature contributions are weighted and rolled up. The composite is anchored on the market/model gap and refined by the feature axes — a positive weakness score means the market is overrating this favourite; a negative one means we agree with the market and there’s no fade to publish.
Stage 07 · Rank & the 5pp gate
Rank six. Publish only what earns it.
The candidates are sorted by weakness score, top six taken. Then the gate fires: any row below a 5 percentage-point lay edge is held back — persisted for audit but hidden from the hub. On days when nothing crosses the bar, the product is willing to say “No qualifying lay today.”
- 1 Keep Grating (Yarmouth 15:08) +15pp LoD ★
- 2 Deep Marker (Ripon 14:20) +11pp publish
- 3 Late Draw (Sandown 15:35) +8pp publish
- 4 Slow Class (Chester 16:00) +6pp publish
- 5 Thin Case (Ascot 14:00) +3pp held back
- 6 Marginal (Newmarket 17:00) +1pp held back
Held-back rows still persist for audit — they just don’t hit the hub. On days when nothing clears the bar the product renders “No qualifying lay today.”
Stage 08 · Nominate the Lay of the Day
One favourite. One lay. Every day.
The top row that clears the gate becomes the day’s Lay of the Day. The remaining publishable rows fill out the shortlist. Every card leaves the factory with the horse, the fractional price, the liability per £1, the gap viz, and the primary reason for the fade.
Today’s most vulnerable favourite.

Stage 09 · Settle
Fav’s finish. Lay’s verdict.
Post-race the pick is graded on the fav’s finishing position. Won → lay lost, layer pays out at settled SP. Placed 2nd+ or DNF → lay landed, layer keeps the £1 stake. Non-runner → void. The row updates in place; nothing is quietly overwritten.

Stage 10 · Honest Record
Every lay, tracked.
Landed, lost, and voided lays all persist. The public ledger leads with P/L per £1 stake — the number that decides whether the strategy actually pays — and pairs it with ROI on liability, the layer’s true return on capital risked.

Stage 11 · Verify
Every pick, on the chain of receipts.
Every published LayPick is committed to Saturday Racing’s proof ledger — canonical hash, Merkle batch, verifiable client-side. No quiet edits, no retro-adjustments. The verify chip on the pick card is a real link to a real receipt.
Every published LayPick is sealed with a SHA-256 canonical hash the instant it’s written, folded into a daily Merkle root at end-of-day, and anchored on-chain when the batch closes. The claim in the leaf reads “position_claim: lay” — the same field Pick Winner and Bet of the Day stamp as “win”, but inverted so a lay commitment can never be misread as a straight backing pick.
