Method
Group 3 quality on a Wednesday-light card is where the edge hides, and today it was sitting in the Naas 18:40 with a speed figure that nothing else in the shortlist came close to matching. I scanned all 42 races declared for 24 June 2026, applying an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1) and a field-size gate of 6–14 runners — tight enough to mean each horse matters, loose enough to give the model proper sample. Feature weights ran as follows: speed at 1.5, form and market move each at 1.2, class change at 1.0, trainer strike rate and going each at 0.8, draw at 0.5 (though the draw layer is not yet built and returned unavailable across every runner today).
Today's universe
The day opened with 177 runners across 42 races. The odds filter trimmed that to 130, removing odds-on shots and anything drifting beyond the 50.0 decimal ceiling. The field-size gate then cut to 57 runners — those in races with between six and fourteen declared — which is the working universe the model scored against.
The shortlist
Five runners made the top tier. Rebel Moon sat clear at the top on 7.47/10. Shushu followed on 6.99/10, propped up almost entirely by a confirmed steamer and a recent win, but with going unavailable and a modest speed edge. Gaelic Approach came in at 6.76/10 — the class drop of two ranks and genuine good-to-firm form gave it real substance, though the trainer strike rate at 10% was a slight drag. Albaydaa scored 6.68/10: Haggas running hot at 21% and another confirmed steamer, but she is rising two class ranks today and that –1.20 class-change penalty mattered. Runswick rounded out the five on 6.38/10, steamering but with a cold trainer and zero placed runs on today's going. The feature that separated Rebel Moon from all of them was the speed score — a z-score of +2.19 against a field mean of 108.6 on an SR of 157. No other runner in the shortlist came within a full z-point of that.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Rebel Moon is that speed score. An SR of 157 against a field mean of 108.6 — a z-score of +2.19 at the 1.5 weight — is the single strongest speed reading across the entire filtered universe today. In a Group 3 fillies' contest at Naas over 1m 2f 84y on good ground, that kind of class-by-numbers separation is the thing I look for first. The form score backs it up: form string of '1', decay-weighted average of +2.00, scoring +3.00 at the 1.2 weight. That is as clean as form gets in this model — the horse came out and won last time, full stop.
The trainer picture is neutral rather than positive — J P O'Brien at 13% over 30 days is on par, not hot. The market has not moved materially in either direction, which means the 3/1 is the market's honest assessment and no late money has complicated the picture. Going is unavailable — no career runs on good or adjacent ground on record — and class change is unavailable too, as there are no prior races with a recognised class to compare against. Those two blanks keep the composite shy of the 8/10 tier and are why ENGINE CONVICTION sits at MEDIUM rather than HIGH.
What I am backing here is a horse whose speed figure stands 48.6 SR points clear of the field average — in a race where the opposition has to close that gap from a standing start. The form confirms it is in form. The price is fair. The composite of 7.47/10 is a strong read by this model's standards, and the gap back to second place — Shushu at 6.99/10 — is wide enough that I am not sitting here agonising.
What worries me
The two unavailable features are the honest holes in this case. Going is a blank — no career runs on good or adjacent ground means we are extrapolating from speed and form alone, and if Rebel Moon simply does not handle good going, that SR of 157 becomes academic. Class change is similarly unavailable, so we cannot measure the step up or down in company — in a Group 3 at Class 1, if this is a step up in grade from unrated company, the form '1' may have been achieved in a softer context than the model can price. The market's flat movement is neither alarming nor reassuring; it just means the 3/1 is the market's honest read with no insider signal to lean on. Draw bias data is not yet in the model. J P O'Brien at 13% is not a concern in itself, but it is not the hot-trainer tailwind you would want when other features have gaps. None of this kills the bet — the speed figure is the kind of edge that survives one or two weak features — but eyes open.
