Sly Man’s Bet of the Day
One horse. One bet. Every day. Sly Man’s read on the day’s card — the shortlist, the price, and the case for the pick.

Method
The money was already moving before I finished my coffee, and when the model confirmed what the market was screaming, this became a straightforward day's work. The engine scanned today's declared card using a weighted feature pipeline: odds band restricted to decimal 2.0–50.0 (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field size capped at 6–14 runners to filter out the noise of small fields and the chaos of big ones. Feature weights applied were speed at 1.5, form and market_move both at 1.2, class_change at 1.0, trainer_strike and going both at 0.8, with draw reserved for v2. The result was a shortlist scored on composite out of 10, and the selection is wherever the numbers and the market are pointing at the same target.
Today's universe
The day opened with 49 races declared and 440 runners across them. The odds-band filter trimmed that to 390 runners — removing odds-on shots and anything drifting into lottery territory. The field-size filter then brought it to 252 runners in races where the format is actually worth trading: fields of 6–14, where form and market signal carry meaning. That is the pool the shortlist was drawn from.
The shortlist
Five runners separated themselves at the top. Stratagem led on 7.10/10, with Zigazig Ah close behind on 7.05/10, then Gliondar at 6.95/10, Moonshine River at 6.93/10, and Poetic Sound at 6.91/10. The gap between first and second is slim — only 0.05 points — and I want to be honest about that. What tipped the balance decisively toward Stratagem was not the composite alone: it was the combination of a full feature set with no critical gaps, a speed rating that cleared the field by a meaningful margin, a confirmed class drop, and a market move that left no room for doubt.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to is the market_move score: +2.00 — a steamer, strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted. That is the maximum the model awards on that feature, and it is weighted at 1.2. The market is not infallible, but when it aligns with what the numbers already show, I listen. And the numbers on Stratagem are genuinely strong across the board. Speed comes in at +1.20 — an SR of 128 against a field mean of 113.3 — which is a solid z-score advantage, not a marginal one. Form reads +1.75: the string '314-31' with a decay-weighted average of +1.17 tells you this horse runs into the places consistently and has been winning recently. The class_change score of +0.90 confirms a drop — today's rank 5 versus last-time-out rank 4, so Stratagem is stepping back into easier company. Going scores +0.83, with 2-from-6 on good or adjacent ground and 4 placed runs in that sample. That is not a dominant going record, but it is not a concern either — the horse handles the conditions. Trainer Mickey Bowen registers a 30-day strike rate of 17%, rated on par, contributing +0.39. Every scored feature is positive. The overall composite of 7.10/10 is solid, and I read the profile as genuinely well-rounded rather than driven by one outlying number.
What worries me
The margin over Zigazig Ah is only 0.05 points, and at 3/1 Zigazig Ah has a sharper market signal on trainer strike rate — Richard Spencer running at 20% (hot) over 30 days versus Bowen's 17%. The draw feature is unavailable across the board (v2), which in a chase over 3m1f at Cartmel matters less than it would on the Flat, but it is still a gap in the data. Going is confirmed workable rather than proven dominant — 2-from-6 is not a horse that lights up on this surface, just one that copes. If there is any overnight softening and the ground shifts beyond the adjacent band, that +0.83 going score needs revisiting. At 5/2 the price is short enough that a poor early position or traffic at Cartmel's tight turns could easily cost the race without the model being wrong.
