Method
The money was already talking before I'd run a single filter — three steamers in the top six, and the sharpest of the lot was a Listed sprinter at the Curragh with an SR that dwarfs its field. Today's scan covered every declared runner in Britain and Ireland, running them through the full pipeline: odds band capped between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing longer than 49/1), then a field-size gate of 6 to 14 runners to cut out the noise at both ends. Feature scores were weighted across speed (1.5), form (1.2), market move (1.2), class change (1.0), trainer strike rate (0.8), going (0.8), and draw (0.5). Draw data is unavailable across the board — reserved for v2 — and class-change data was similarly absent for most of the flat runners today, so those gaps are factored into my confidence read rather than glossed over.
Today's universe
The day opened with 30 races and 297 runners declared. The race-state check dropped none. The odds-band filter cut it to 265 runners — removing odds-on runners and anything beyond the 49/1 ceiling. The field-size filter then trimmed to 218 runners, keeping only races with between 6 and 14 declared starters. Those 218 runners across the qualifying races formed the pool the engine scored.
The shortlist
Five horses cleared 6.90/10 on composite. Silk Braid led the board at 8.19/10 — a margin of more than a full point over second-placed Zarathos at 7.13/10. Factual Fact was almost level with Zarathos at 7.12/10, separated by a whisker. Livenka came in at 6.97/10 and Newtown Rambler at 6.95/10, with Kom Tu Voudras just behind at 6.93/10. What separated Silk Braid from the rest was the combination of an exceptional speed score — an SR that sits +2.35 standard deviations above its field mean — and a confirmed steamer in a Listed race, where market intelligence tends to be tighter and more meaningful. No other horse in the shortlist came close on speed, and the form score backed it up.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Silk Braid is the speed figure. An SR of 159 against a field mean of 98.7 — a z-score of +2.35 at weight 1.5 — is the kind of number that dominates a composite. That is not a marginal edge; that is a horse operating on a different plane to most of its rivals in this Curragh Listed sprint. The engine weighted speed most heavily for good reason, and Silk Braid is the only horse in today's shortlist that scores above +2.0 on that feature.
The form backs it up. Recent form reading '1-2' with a decay-weighted average of +1.41 on the form feature scores +2.12 at weight 1.2. That is consecutive top-two finishes with recency on its side. Then the market: a confirmed steamer, strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted, scoring +2.00 at weight 1.2. In a Listed race at the Curragh, that kind of clean directional move — no book drifting against — carries real signal. The trainer angle adds further weight: G M Lyons at 20% strike rate over the last 30 days, classed as hot, contributing +0.67 at weight 0.8.
Three features are unavailable for Silk Braid — class change, going, and draw. The class-change gap exists because there are no prior races with a recognised class to benchmark against, which is a genuine information hole. The going absence is the one I flag more directly: there are no career runs on good to firm or adjacent going on record, so we cannot confirm this surface suits. At the Curragh in late June on good to firm ground, that is not a trivial unknown. But the composite of 8.19/10 is built on what we do know, and what we know is strong.
What worries me
The going gap is the honest risk here. Silk Braid has no recorded runs on good to firm or adjacent ground — that feature returned unavailable — so surface suitability is an assumption, not a confirmed fact. If the ground rides quicker than expected or the horse has a preference that isn't yet in the record, that 8.19/10 composite was built without it. The class-change feature is also absent; no prior recognised class means we cannot confirm whether Listed level represents a step up that stretches this horse. The odds at 10/3 reflect a market that clearly believes in it, but at that price there is limited margin for error if either unknown bites. Finally, both Zarathos and Factual Fact are confirmed steamers in their own right — if the Curragh card runs to market, money is moving across multiple races, not uniquely to Silk Braid.
