Browse the logbookAngel Of Heaven steamers hard — market does the talking
Method
On a card where the form book has gaping holes in every novice, the market is your best informant — and this morning it pointed hard at one name. Today's scan covered 34 declared races and 289 runners, then ran three filters: odds band 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1 — price discipline matters), field size 6–14 runners (cutting out the chaos at both extremes), and a weighted composite built from speed, form, class change, trainer strike rate, going, market move, and draw. Weights reflect what I trust most: speed at 1.5, form and market move jointly at 1.2, class change at 1.0, trainer strike and going at 0.8, draw at 0.5 — with draw suspended entirely pending the v2 data layer.
Today's universe
The race-state screen left all 289 runners in play — no abandonments, no already-resulted races on the card. The odds filter trimmed that to 253, removing odds-on shots and outliers beyond 49/1. The field-size screen brought us to 230 runners in qualifying races — small fields cut for noise, large fields cut for chaos. Those 230 were the working universe for today's score-off.
The shortlist
Six horses cleared the composite threshold and made the shortlist. Top of the pile: Angel Of Heaven at 6.92/10, just ahead of Abrahamsen at 6.82/10 — both in the same race at Kempton AW 17:45. Trio came third at 6.63/10, Queen Sana fourth at 6.62/10, Soldier Of The Sea fifth at 6.55/10, and Revelance sixth at 6.48/10. The gap between first and second is marginal — 0.10 points — so I want to be straight with the reader: this is not a runaway score. What tipped Angel Of Heaven over Abrahamsen was the trainer-strike feature, where Fanshawe's hot form nudged her clear of Watson's ice-cold 4% rate dragging the second horse back.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to is the market move on Angel Of Heaven. The engine scores that at +2.00 under a weight of 1.2 — the maximum signal in that feature, logged as a steamer with a strict majority of bookies having shortened and none having drifted. In a novice with no published form string and no going data on file, that kind of market consensus is not noise; somebody with more information than the racecard is prepared to commit money. I take that seriously.
On speed, Angel Of Heaven posts an SR of 150 against a field mean of 131.0, a z-score of +0.73 under the highest feature weight of 1.5. Abrahamsen actually edges her here — SR 154, z +0.89 — but Abrahamsen's trainer stat is a problem: Archie Watson at 4% strike rate over the last 30 days scores -0.63, whereas James Fanshawe's 20% strike rate — 12 winners from 60 runners — scores +0.67. That swing of 1.30 points on trainer strike is what separates them at the top of the table. Hot trainer, steaming market, speed above the field average: the composite of 6.92/10 is solid rather than strong, but the ingredients point in the same direction.
I had a long look at Trio in the 18:45 at Kempton — she has the most complete data profile in the shortlist, with going form (1-from-4, three placed on good to soft), a class drop, and the speed edge in her race. But her composite of 6.63/10 is a full 0.29 points below Angel Of Heaven, and the earlier race with the fresher market signal is where I want to be today.
What worries me
The honest caveat here is that the evidence base for Angel Of Heaven has real holes in it. Form is unavailable — no form string on file, so I have no decay-weighted read on recent performances. Going is unavailable — no career runs on good to soft or adjacent ground logged, so she could be seeing this surface for the first time. Class change is unavailable for the same reason: no prior races with a recognised class to compare against. That is three of seven features returning no signal. The composite of 6.92/10 is built on speed, trainer strike, and market move — a thinner foundation than I would prefer. Abrahamsen is breathing right down the neck of the selection at 6.82/10 and has a form string reading '1' with the full market steamer alongside; if Archie Watson's recent cold spell breaks today, that horse runs the winner without much ceremony. Draw bias data is also absent across the board — reserved for v2 — so stall position is an unquantified variable in this 7f Kempton AW contest.
