Sly Man’s Bet of the Day
One horse. One bet. Every day. Sly Man’s read on the day’s card — the shortlist, the price, and the case for the pick.

Method
There is one horse on the board today where every layer of evidence points the same direction, and the market got there before I did. The scan covered all 48 races declared for 2026-07-02, running 469 runners through the pipeline. Stage one applied the odds filter — decimal 2.0 to 50.0, no odds-on — trimming the field to 417 runners. Stage two applied the field-size gate, keeping only races with 6–14 declared runners on the basis that smaller fields are noisy and larger ones are chaos, leaving 293 runners in play for scoring. Feature weights used across those survivors: speed at 1.5, form and market_move jointly at 1.2, class_change at 1.0, trainer_strike and going at 0.8, with draw reserved for v2.
Today's universe
The day opened with 48 races and 469 runners. The odds-band filter dropped 52 runners — primarily odds-on favourites and big-priced outsiders. The field-size filter then removed a further 124 runners, cutting chaotic large-field races and thin small-field affairs. That left 293 runners from which the engine built its shortlist.
The shortlist
The top six by composite score were The Flying Poet (7.17/10), Dion Baker (6.88/10), Fanciulla Del West (6.74/10), Jimtrott (6.71/10), Eastmore (6.67/10), and Silly Mongoose (6.62/10). The gap between first and second — 0.29 points — is meaningful without being commanding, so I looked hard at Dion Baker before landing back at the top. What separates The Flying Poet is the convergence of a market-move signal and a form line and a speed advantage all pulling in the same direction simultaneously; Dion Baker has a hotter trainer and cleaner going figures but no market signal at all, which is the feature that tips the balance.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on The Flying Poet is the market-move score. A maximum +2.00 on a weight of 1.2 means a strict majority of bookies shortened this horse overnight with none drifting — that is not noise, that is money going somewhere with conviction, and at 7/4 (decimal 2.75) it still sits comfortably inside the odds band. That signal alone would not be enough, but it is corroborated on every meaningful feature. Speed rating of SR 107 against a field mean of 85.7 — a z-score of +1.66 — is a genuine class edge in a Class 5 chase at Perth. The form string '221-12' decays out to a weighted average of +2.14 on the form feature, which is the strongest form score across the entire shortlist. The horse has been consistently threatening and has a recent win in the sequence.
The trainer picture is modest rather than hot — Olly Murphy at 16% over the last 30 days is on par rather than firing, contributing just +0.34 — but I do not need a hot trainer when speed, form, and the market are already aligned. The going score of +0.93, based on 2-from-7 with 6 placed on good or adjacent going, is solid rather than exceptional, but it confirms the horse handles these conditions rather than merely tolerating them. Six placements from seven runs on comparable ground is a consistency pattern worth respecting.
I had a long look at Fanciulla Del West — also a steamer, with the highest raw speed z-score on the shortlist at +1.87 — but her going record of 0-from-2 on good to firm is a genuine concern at Newbury today, and her composite of 6.74/10 trails The Flying Poet by 0.43 points. The scores pointed the same way my eye did.
What worries me
The composite here is 7.17/10 — strong by the engine's own scale, but not untouchable, and Dion Baker at 6.88/10 is close enough that a small data revision could have reversed the order. The most meaningful operational risk is going: Perth's going is declared Good today and The Flying Poet's record on similar ground is 2-from-7 — placed six times, yes, but a win rate of roughly 29% on that surface is not dominant. Any overnight rain or morning watering that shifts the ground softer than Good would introduce fresh uncertainty, since going data for softer conditions is not broken out in today's research log. The draw feature is absent across the board — v2 build — and over 2m7f180y in a chase it is less material than in a flat sprint, so I am not weighting that gap heavily. Trainer strike rate at 16% is unremarkable and provides no uplift. At 7/4 the margin for error is slim: this is not a price where you get away with a bad beat and shrug.
