Method

A steamer in a maiden at Bellewstown with the best speed rating in the shortlist is the kind of signal I don't ignore on a Friday evening card — that's where today's story starts. The engine ran across 48 races and 461 runners declared for Saturday, applying a three-stage filter pipeline: race state cleared all 461; the odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (evens to 49/1, no odds-on shots) cut that to 400; then field size — races with 6–14 declared runners only — trimmed the surviving pool to 249 runners who went forward to scoring. Feature weights ran in this order of influence: speed at 1.5, form and market move both at 1.2, class change at 1.0, trainer strike rate and going both at 0.8, and draw reserved for a future build.

Today's universe

The 249 runners who cleared both filters spread across a mix of flat and jumps cards on Friday and Saturday — Irish evening meetings at Bellewstown and Wexford, plus the Saturday afternoon programme at Sandown, Chepstow, and Newton Abbot. Six horses made the shortlist proper, composites ranging from 6.56/10 up to 6.87/10. The band is tight — this is not a day where one horse ran away with the numbers.

The shortlist

The top six by composite were Tradewinds (6.87/10), Nouvotic (6.85/10), Collateral Damage (6.82/10), The Balearic Sun (6.78/10), Vastern (6.73/10), and Likewhatyousee (6.56/10). The gap between first and second is 0.02 — marginal, and I'm not pretending otherwise. What separated Tradewinds from Nouvotic was not raw composite but the combination of a sharper speed figure in context and a stronger market-move signal on a horse at bigger odds. Collateral Damage pushed hard — a form score of +3.00 is the cleanest number on the sheet today — but the class rise worked against it and the race at Sandown 15:00 is shared with The Balearic Sun, which adds noise.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to with Tradewinds is the speed-plus-market combination. An SR of 154 against a field mean of 135.5 produces a z-score of +1.62 — that is the strongest speed edge available among the top four, and it is weighted at 1.5 in the model, the heaviest feature on the board. That alone doesn't win the argument, but then the market came in hard: a strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted, and the model scores that a full +2.00 on the market-move feature at weight 1.2. When speed and money are pointing the same direction in a maiden, I take notice. The form string '532' with a decay-weighted average of +0.61 is modest but honest — this horse has been placing without winning, which is exactly the profile of a runner that the market decides has found its race. At 11/4 it's not a price you're going to retire on, but it is a fair each-way price in a six-to-fourteen runner field where the speed figure is genuine.

What worries me

Three things could derail this. First, the trainer strike rate of 2% over 30 days is genuinely cold — if there is a yard issue that hasn't yet surfaced publicly, the market hasn't fully priced it. Second, going is UNAVAILABLE — no career runs on good or adjacent ground on record, so we are betting into an unknown surface profile. Third, the composite margin over Nouvotic is just 0.02 — a different weighting of the form feature and it flips. The class field is unrecognised, which also means the class-change feature contributed nothing to the score. I'm backing the speed-and-market read, but this is a MEDIUM conviction call in an honest register — not a banker.
