Method
The market said something loud this morning, and for once the speed data backed the whisper. Today's scan covered all declared runners through a three-stage filter pipeline: odds band set at 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing above 49/1), field size capped at 6–14 runners to strip out the chaos at either extreme, and feature scores weighted with market move carrying the heaviest load at 1.6, speed next at 1.5, then form at 1.2, class change at 1.0, trainer strike and going sharing 0.8, and draw reserved for v2 — unavailable across the entire board today.
Today's universe
The day opened with 40 races and 366 runners declared. The race-state check held all 366 — no abandonments, no early results. The odds filter trimmed that to 304, removing odds-on runners and any priced above 49/1. Field-size cut brought it to 253 runners — those inside the 6-to-14 bracket where the model has meaningful signal. That is the pool the shortlist was drawn from.
The shortlist
Six horses cleared the composite threshold worth serious attention. Instant Bond topped the board at 7.47/10, driven by a market-move score of +2.00, a speed z-score of +1.84, and a trainer strike rate that is genuinely hot right now. Count Bezukhov came in second at 7.39/10 — strong form and a clean steamer — but the market-implied probability of 39.7% versus an estimated win probability of 37.5% meant the edge read as -15.7%, a negative that is hard to ignore. Catalani at 7.38/10 carries an extraordinary model edge of +218.1% at 15/2, though form, class, and going data are all unavailable — too many holes in the evidence to anchor confidence. Zenford and Ottoman Chief both scored 7.37 and 7.09 respectively, both steamers, but both missing class-change and going data. Morris Dancer brought the most complete feature set in the Listed race at Newmarket but sat at 7.04/10 with a negative edge of -19.5%. The tipping point for Instant Bond was the combination of the highest composite, a positive market edge of +8.8%, and data that actually exists across the key features.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to is Michael Wigham's numbers. A 43% strike rate over the last 30 days from 6/14 — that is not a hot patch, that is a stable firing on all cylinders, and the feature score of +2.57 on trainer strike reflects it. At Class 6, 5f182y on good ground at Carlisle, this is exactly the kind of conditions assignment where a yard in form places runners deliberately. The engine gave the trainer feature a weight of 0.8, and it still moved the needle materially because the raw rate is so far above par.
The speed picture is equally clean. Instant Bond carries an SR of 73 against a field mean of 53.1 — a z-score of +1.84, identical to Zenford but in a race where I can actually compare going records and form. The form string '133101' gives a decay-weighted average of +0.93 on the latest win, and the score of +1.39 on form at weight 1.2 is solid rather than spectacular — enough to underpin the case without papering over cracks.
The market confirms the picture. A strict steamer — the majority of bookies shortened, none drifted — produced a market-move score of +2.00 under the highest feature weight in the model (1.6). The estimated win probability of 37.9% against a market-implied 31.1% represents an edge of +8.8%. That is not enormous, but it is positive, it is directionally consistent with everything else, and it sits in the odds band — 15/8, decimal 2.875 — where the model has been calibrated. The composite of 7.47/10 is a solid score; I would not call it bulletproof, but the data behind it is more complete than anything else on today's board.
What worries me
Draw data is unavailable across the entire card — that feature is reserved for v2 — and over a sprint trip of 5f182y at Carlisle, draw position can matter. I cannot quantify that risk today. The going record is thin: 2-from-5 with 2 placed on good or adjacent going is encouraging but not deep. If the ground moves — Carlisle can ease quickly — and the horse has shown a preference that is not yet visible in the data, that is exposure I cannot model. The composite margin over Count Bezukhov and Catalani is only 0.08 and 0.09 respectively — marginal enough that the second and third horses are genuinely breathing on Instant Bond's neck. Catalani in particular carries that extraordinary headline edge figure, and if the missing form and going data were positive, it could flip the order. The conviction band is MEDIUM and that is honest — this is the strongest case on the board today, not a nailed-on.
