The engine scanned all declared runners through three sequential filters: an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field sizes of 6–14 runners, and a weighted composite built from speed (1.5), form (1.2), class change (1.0), trainer strike rate (0.8), going (0.8), market move (1.6), and draw (0.5). Market move carries the heaviest single weight in the model — that is a deliberate choice, because sustained market pressure across multiple books is harder to fake than any single data point — and today it rewarded the runner whose speed figure added the most independent corroboration.
Today started with 50 races and 575 runners. The odds band trimmed that to 474 runners — removing odds-on favourites and anything priced beyond 49/1. The field-size filter then cut the remainder to 309 runners in races of 6–14 declared, clearing the noise of big-field scrambles and the distortions of tiny match-ups. Those 309 runners were the working universe for the composite scoring.
Six horses cleared all filters with composites above 6.96/10. Good Onya Mate topped the board at 7.46/10, followed by Regency Royal at 7.23/10, Our Guide at 7.10/10, Toastmaster at 7.03/10, Nochebuena at 7.01/10, and Peaceful Warrior at 6.96/10. What separated the top two from the field was a full +2.00 market-move score combined with a speed z-score that sat meaningfully clear of the field mean — Good Onya Mate won the score-off because its speed figure was the sharpest of any confirmed steamer: SR 150 against a field mean of 129.6, a z-score of +1.80, versus Regency Royal's SR 147 at z +1.25. That gap — both in raw SR and in composite — made the choice clean.
The read I keep coming back to with Good Onya Mate is the combination of a genuine market signal and a speed figure that holds up independently. The +2.00 market-move score — the maximum the model can assign, triggered when a strict majority of bookies shortened and none drifted — is rare enough on its own. Pair it with a speed contribution of +1.15 to the composite (SR 150 against the field's 129.6, z +1.80) and you have two features pulling in the same direction from entirely different evidence bases. That is what I want when the form string is unavailable. I cannot tell you the horse's last three runs; the data is not there. But the market knows, and the speed figure says this runner has capacity the field does not.
The risk list here is longer than I would like. Form is entirely absent from the file — I am flying without knowing whether this horse has been competitive, placed, or beaten out of sight in its previous starts. Going data is similarly blank, so if the ground at Cork shifts even slightly, I have no read on how Good Onya Mate handles it. The trainer strike rate is on par at best. Regency Royal at 7.23/10 is not far behind — another confirmed steamer with solid speed — and if you felt more comfortable with the Chester flat race context, that argument is not unreasonable. The main structural risk is that an edge of +183.6% in a maiden hurdle can evaporate quickly once the race shape becomes clear; this is not a horse with an established form book to lean on when things go wrong mid-race. Medium conviction is where the engine landed, and I am not going to talk you out of that caution.
