Ferrystream steamers in — and the market agrees

Method

The money doesn't lie, and today everything that moved moved the same way — but one horse moved hardest with the numbers to back it up. Today's scan covered the full Saturday card: odds filtered to the 2.0–50.0 decimal band (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field size locked to 6–14 declared runners. Feature weights ran at speed ×1.5, market_move ×1.6, form ×1.2, class_change ×1.0, trainer_strike ×0.8, going ×0.8, draw ×0.5 (draw-bias data not yet built — v2 feature). Market movement carries the heaviest single weight in this engine, and it was the clearest signal of the day.

Today's universe

The day opened with 36 races and 303 runners declared. The odds-band filter trimmed that to 260 runners, cutting odds-on shots and long outsiders beyond 49/1. The field-size filter — removing races with fewer than 6 or more than 14 runners — brought the working universe down to 205 runners across a manageable set of competitive races. Those 205 are what the scoring engine worked through.

The shortlist

Five horses separated themselves from the field. Ferrystream topped the board at 7.52/10. Leonardo Blu sat second at 7.20/10, with the strongest raw speed figure in the shortlist (SR 159) and a clean recent form string, but at 7/4 the market edge was a sliver — just +0.5% implied-vs-estimated. Hey Stella posted 6.98/10 and a wild market-edge reading of +201.8%, though that number reflects thin implied probability at 15/2 rather than genuine certainty, and several key features were unavailable. Autumn Affair at 6.71/10 and White Ladder at 6.69/10 both steamered but carried lower composites and colder trainer form in the case of White Ladder. What tipped the balance for Ferrystream was the combination of the highest composite on the sheet, a clean speed advantage, and the market-move score firing at maximum — all pointing in the same direction.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to with Ferrystream is that nothing on the sheet is contradicting the model. The speed figure is the sharpest in the race: SR 154 against a field mean of 136.4, a z-score of +1.53 on a weight of 1.5 — that's the engine saying this horse is meaningfully faster than the average rival lining up against it today. The market_move score is +2.00 — maximum — meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened overnight with none drifting. The estimated win probability sits at 38.1% against a market-implied 20.6%, a raw edge of +65.1%. That gap is too wide to ignore. Jane Chapple-Hyam's trainer strike rate of 18% over the last 30 days (7 from 39) is on par rather than standout, contributing just +0.17 to the composite, but it's not a drag either. The price of 10/3 decimal 4.33 sits comfortably inside the odds band and offers real value if the model's probability estimate is even half-right. The conviction engine returns MEDIUM — not a screamer, but a firm, evidence-led call.

What worries me

The gaps in the data are real and worth naming. Form is unavailable — there is no form string on file for Ferrystream, which means the model cannot verify recent racecourse behaviour, and in a novice stakes that matters. Going is also unavailable — no career runs on good or adjacent ground, so we cannot confirm this horse handles today's conditions. Class change data is absent for the same reason (no prior recognised-class races to compare). That is three of seven features returning no signal, which is why the composite of 7.52/10 is strong rather than emphatic. Leonardo Blu at 7.20/10 has a richer data profile — form, going, and speed all scoring — and is the obvious danger if Ferrystream is less battle-hardened than the market move suggests. A going change toward soft would also be a concern given the absence of any ground-condition evidence.
