Method
Yorkshire festival, a maiden steamer, and a sprint filly dropping in class — that is the day's pull, and the engine settled on the horse that threads all three strengths at once. The scan covered Saturday's full card: odds band filtered to decimal 2.0–50.0 (no odds-on, nothing wilder than 49/1), field size trimmed to 6–14 declared runners. Feature weights ran in descending order of authority: market_move at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, then class_change, trainer_strike, and going each contributing at lower weights, with draw reserved for v2.
Today's universe
The day opened with 54 races and 454 runners. The odds-band filter dropped 67 runners — odds-on shots and outsiders beyond the range — leaving 387. The field-size filter then trimmed a further 111, removing small fields of five or fewer and large fields of fifteen-plus, landing on 276 runners that went into composite scoring.
The shortlist
Six horses cleared the filters with composite scores worth discussing. Badri led the board at 6.79/10, driven by form, speed, and a trainer currently running hot. Time Alone scored 6.55/10 — its market_move was the standout feature, a clean steamer at 11/1, but form and going data are entirely unavailable and the trainer's 4% strike rate over the last 30 days is a real drag. Rose Of Honour came in at 6.47/10 with a sharp speed figure and a two-class drop, but no market signal either way. Marsala at 6.46/10 showed a steamer and a strong SR, though one run of form is thin. Goldie Trickett (6.39/10) is a steamer too, but 0-from-3 on good to firm and a negative form score make it harder to trust. What separated Badri from the field was the combination of a legitimate speed advantage, the best form score on the sheet, and a trainer strike rate that adds genuine weight rather than just noise.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to is the speed figure. Badri's SR of 97 against a field mean of 86.7 gives a z-score of +1.58 — that is not a marginal edge, that is a horse running measurably faster than the company it is about to face at Pontefract. With a weight of 1.5 applied, that translates to the second-biggest driver of the composite, and it holds up against real field data, not projection. The form score backs it up hard. The form string '061711' has a decay-weighted average that comes out at +1.37 for the latest finish — the recent win is not buried under stale placings, it is the freshest data point in the sequence, and the model credits it accordingly. Combined with the class drop from rank 3 last time out to rank 4 today, there is a genuine softening of the task here. The engine flags a +0.90 class_change contribution. Michael Herrington runs at 24% over 29 runners in the last 30 days — that is a hot trainer by any measure, and the +1.01 trainer_strike score reflects it. The market implied probability sits at 22.3% against the engine's estimated win probability of 34.6%, an edge of +38.4%. There is no market movement signal to read into — no steamer, no drift — but the model does not need one here. The underlying data is doing the work.
What worries me
The most honest risk is the composite itself — 6.79/10 is solid, not dominant. This is not an 8+ conviction call; it is a well-supported medium-conviction play, and the engine is labelled accordingly. Time Alone is breathing down its neck at 6.55 with a late steamer behind it, and if that market move reflects information the speed and form layers cannot see, the 11/1 could be the better bet on the day — I am not backing it, but I am not ignoring it either. On Badri specifically: the going score of +1.06 is built on 4-from-9 with 6 placed on good or adjacent going, which is decent, but not an unbeatable record. The distance is 5 furlongs 3 yards at Pontefract — a quirky, undulating track — and draw data is unavailable for v2, which means we cannot assess whether the stall position costs ground. Any significant going change toward soft before the 19:07 off would erode that going score fast.
