Method
The market steamered something home at the Curragh this afternoon, and when the model agreed, I stopped looking elsewhere. Today's scan covered 28 declared races and 196 runners, run through a three-stage filter pipeline: first, odds trimmed to the 2.0–50.0 decimal band (no odds-on, no 50/1 shots); then field size restricted to 6–14 runners, cutting out the noise of tiny fields and the chaos of big ones. That left 136 runners in contention, scored across seven features — speed, form, class change, trainer strike rate, going, market move, and draw — with market move carrying the heaviest weight at 1.6 and speed close behind at 1.5. Draw data is unavailable across the board; that layer is reserved for v2. Every number below comes from the research log.
Today's universe
The day opened with 28 races and 196 runners declared. The odds-band filter removed 25 runners priced odds-on or beyond 49/1, leaving 171. The field-size filter then cut a further 35 runners from races outside the 6–14 range, leaving a working universe of 136 runners across the qualifying races. That is the pool the model scored.
The shortlist
Five horses separated themselves at the top. Trustyourinstinct led the board at 7.19/10, a clear step above the cluster beneath it. Mojito Madness and Makinbecon both scored 7.00/10, tied but very different profiles — Mojito Madness is speed-led with a near-zero going score and a marginal market edge of -6.6%, while Makinbecon is undermined by a trainer strike rate of just 4% over 30 days, the coldest handler on the shortlist. Crystal Jet came in at 6.89/10 with a clean class drop and a strong steam, but a blank going record on today's ground. My Girl Katie scored 6.84/10 — solid form, decent going record, but another cold trainer at 8% and a Class 5 handicap chase over 3m1f that adds variance. What tipped the balance to Trustyourinstinct was the combination of the top market-move score, the highest speed rating relative to its field, and a Group 2 context where the steam means something.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to is the market move. Trustyourinstinct scored +2.00 on market move — a strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted. In a Group 2 at the Curragh, that kind of coordinated move at 8/1 is not noise. The model's estimated win probability is 36.5% against a market implied 9.9%, an edge of +228.6% — the largest positive edge on today's entire shortlist by a significant margin. I have seen that number look flattering on weak races; this is not a weak race. The 1xBet.ie Curragh Cup is Group 2 company, and the steam still held.
The speed picture supports the money. An SR of 115 against a field mean of 102.5 gives a z-score of +0.93 (weighted score +0.93, feature contribution solid rather than exceptional). More importantly, the going score is genuine — 2-from-4 with 4 placed on good to firm or adjacent ground, a going score of +1.20. Today's going is good to firm. That is not a horse finding conditions alien to it; it has done its best work on this surface. Form reads '6-7212', decay-weighted at +0.97, with the latest run a win. Joseph Patrick O'Brien is operating at 19% over the last 30 days from 28/150 — hot by any measure, and the trainer-strike contribution of +0.56 reflects it. Class change is unavailable; no prior class comparison could be built. That is a gap, but in a Group 2 with a field the horse has outpaced on speed figures, I do not find it disqualifying.
The composite of 7.19/10 is the strongest score on the day, and unlike the tied scores at 7.00 where the underlying features had clear holes, Trustyourinstinct has no single feature actively pulling against it. The class-change gap is an absence of data, not a negative signal. Everything the model can measure points the same direction.
What worries me
Group 2 racing at the Curragh means the opposition is not soft, and 8/1 in that company reflects genuine doubt about whether Trustyourinstinct can step up. The form string '6-7212' includes a pair of finishing positions — sixth and seventh — that the decay weighting softens but does not erase; there are days this horse does not fire. Class change is flagged as unavailable — no prior races with a recognised class to compare — so I cannot tell you whether it has previously run in Group 2 company or is stepping up from a lower level. That is a meaningful gap in the profile. Going is good to firm today but conditions can shift through the afternoon at the Curragh; any softening would test a going score built on a thin sample of four runs. The engine conviction is rated MEDIUM, and I would not argue for upgrading it — the edge is large but the sample size on key features is limited and the competition is the sharpest on today's card.
