Sly Man’s Bet of the Day
One horse. One bet. Every day. Sly Man’s read on the day’s card — the shortlist, the price, and the case for the pick.

Method
There are days when the filters point one way and the money points the same way, and today is one of those days — that combination does not come around as often as people think. The engine scanned 39 races and 344 runners declared this Saturday, applying a three-stage pipeline: first stripping out abandoned and already-resulted races (no change at 344); then cutting to runners priced between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal — no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1 — which brought the field to 300; then removing runners in races with fewer than six or more than fourteen declared runners, on the basis that small fields are noisy and big fields are chaos, landing at 221 runners in scope. Feature weights going into scoring were: market_move 1.6 (highest), speed 1.5, form 1.2, class_change and going both 0.8, trainer_strike 0.8, draw 0.5 — though draw data is unavailable across the board, reserved for v2 of the model.
Today's universe
The day opened with 39 races and 344 runners. The odds-band filter removed 44 runners, leaving 300. The field-size filter then trimmed a further 79, leaving 221 runners alive across the pipeline — those are the horses that went into composite scoring.
The shortlist
The top six by composite were Chosen Shant at 7.49/10, I Bid You Ajou at 6.86/10, Teenage Kiss at 6.75/10, Little Ledgend at 6.73/10, Ideal Guest at 6.72/10, and Mancero at 6.72/10. The gap between first and second is 0.63 points — meaningful at this level but not enormous, so I want to be transparent that I Bid You Ajou is breathing on Chosen Shant's neck. What tipped the balance decisively was Chosen Shant's speed rating, which ran well clear of its rivals, combined with a market-move signal that matched the top reading across the entire shortlist. On market edge, Chosen Shant posted +51.8% — only Teenage Kiss (+49.1%) and Ideal Guest (+71.3%) rival that figure, but neither matched the speed floor.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Chosen Shant is the speed number. An SR of 91 against a field mean of 71.9 is a z-score of +1.58 — that is a substantial gap, and at the weighted rate of 1.5 it delivers +1.58 into the composite before anything else is counted. That kind of speed superiority over a field in a 1m7f110y handicap steeplechase at Wexford on good ground is the kind of margin that does not evaporate easily. The model's estimated win probability is 38.0% against a market-implied 22.3%, giving an edge of +51.8% — that is the engine telling me the price is wrong by more than half again.
Then there is the market move. The signal here is clean: a strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted. That is the maximum market_move score available — +2.00 at a weight of 1.6 — and it is the same score posted by four other horses on today's shortlist, so on its own it would not separate anyone. But when the money comes in and the speed superiority is this wide, I take that seriously. The form string '-74371' is not spectacular on the face of it, but the decay-weighted average on the latest win carries +0.69, and the going profile — two wins from four starts on good or adjacent ground, with a further three placed efforts — means the conditions today are not unfamiliar territory.
Trainer strike rate and class change are both unavailable for this runner, which does leave gaps in the picture. I am not pretending otherwise. But on the two features that carry the most weight in this engine — market_move and speed — Chosen Shant leads the shortlist outright, and the composite of 7.49/10 sits in genuinely strong territory.
What worries me
The honest risks here are real. Class change is flagged as unavailable — the race class is unrecognised by the model, so I cannot tell you whether this runner is stepping up, down, or running at its habitual level; that is a genuine blind spot. Trainer strike rate is also unavailable, falling below the noise threshold of five runners in thirty days, so there is no trainer form signal at all to lean on. The form string '-74371' includes a pull-up and several mid-field finishes before the most recent win — consistency has not been a defining characteristic. And I Bid You Ajou at 6.86/10 is close enough that if any of the missing data on Chosen Shant came back negative, the scoring order might shift. Conviction here is engine-rated MEDIUM, and I think that is the right call.
