Must Be Love steamers hardest when evidence is thin on form

Method

The market doesn't lie when every bookie moves the same way — and today, that signal does most of the heavy lifting. I ran the engine across today's declared card, applying an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing drifting beyond 49/1) and a field-size gate of 6–14 runners, stripping out the chaos of large fields and the false economy of short-priced favourites. Feature weights lean hardest on market movement at 1.6, then speed at 1.5, then form at 1.2, with class, trainer, and going weighted progressively lighter. One runner was dropped via lay-of-day collision, leaving a clean working universe before scoring began.

Today's universe

The day opened with 36 races and 391 runners. The odds band trimmed that to 356; the field-size filter brought it down to 236; one lay-of-day exclusion left 235 runners in the live pool. From those, the engine scored and ranked, surfacing a shortlist of six for human review.

The shortlist

Must Be Love led the board at 7.70/10, driven primarily by a maximum market-move score and a speed reading that put her meaningfully clear of her field. Nabati sat second at 7.62/10 — a more complete profile in many ways, with strong form ('121'), a hot Appleby yard, and an SR that dominates its field — but a class-rise penalty of -1.50 dragged the composite back. Two Commanders scored 7.26/10 with the going feature actually firing (2-from-2 on good to soft), though Edward Bethell's 14% trainer strike rate is merely on par and provides no extra lift. Tiora Time sits fourth at 7.23/10 with a notable positive edge of +101.9% between estimated win probability and market implied — the largest model-vs-market gap on the board. Silver Lake rounds out the meaningful contenders at 7.05/10, with three consecutive wins in her form string and Haggas in the yard, but a patchy going record and an on-par trainer rate kept the score modest. The balance tipped to Must Be Love on the combined weight of her market move and raw speed superiority.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to is the market move. Must Be Love registers a +2.00 market-move score — the maximum the engine awards — meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened her overnight with none drifting. At 6/5 (decimal 2.2), she's already the shortest price on the shortlist, and the money that moved her there came in with conviction. That's not noise; that's information. The market implied probability sits at 40.6%, and the engine's own estimate comes in at 39.0% — the edge is marginal at -14.3%, which I'll acknowledge plainly, but when the speed and trainer data align alongside that move, a thin edge doesn't disqualify the selection.

On speed, her SR 156 against a field mean of 146.3 produces a z-score of +1.51 (weighted contribution +0.97) — she is measurably quicker than what she's facing on the figures. The Gosden yard — John and Thady — runs at 25% over the last 30 days from 17 winners from 68 runners, which the engine scores as hot. That's a yard that turns up ready.

What I have to be straight about: form is unavailable, class-change data is unavailable, going data is unavailable, and draw bias is a v2 feature not yet in the engine. This is a horse with three missing features. Her composite of 7.70/10 is built on speed, trainer, and market — and those three things all point the same direction. That's what tips my hand.

What worries me

Three unavailable features is a real exposure and I won't pretend otherwise. With no form string on file, I can't read how she's travelled through her recent races or whether she's progressing or regressing. No going data means I have no read on whether good ground suits her — she could be a horse that wants softer. No class-change data means I can't tell if today's Class 3 maiden represents a step up or down in the gradient of competition she's faced. Nabati at 7.62/10 is breathing closely enough that if any of those missing features would have scored negatively, the gap closes or inverts. And at 6/5, there is almost no margin for error in the return — if she runs second, you've backed a loser at a price that offers nothing back.
