Sly Man’s Bet of the Day
One horse. One bet. Every day. Sly Man’s read on the day’s card — the shortlist, the price, and the case for the pick.

Method
Every steamer in the top six today fired the same signal, so the job was finding which one had the cleanest backing evidence underneath the money. The engine scanned all 304 runners declared across 36 races on 22 September 2026 and pushed them through four sequential filters: first, race state (no abandonments dropped — 304 survived); then the odds band, keeping only runners priced between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal (evens to 49/1, no odds-on) — 274 remained; then field size, retaining only races with 6–14 declared runners — 229 survived; finally, one runner was removed after a lay-of-day collision, leaving 228 eligible runners scored by composite. Feature weights were applied as configured: market_move at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going at 0.8 each, trainer_strike at 0.8, and draw at 0.5 — though the draw layer remains unbuilt and contributed nothing today.
Today's universe
The day opened with 304 runners across 36 races. The odds-band filter removed 30 runners (odds-on shots and 50/1-plus outsiders), the field-size filter cut a further 45 (noisy small fields and chaotic big ones), and a single lay-of-day collision cleared one more. The final eligible pool was 228 runners — a solid base to score from.
The shortlist
The top six composites were separated by less than 0.3 points across the board, which tells you this is a competitive day rather than a standout one — I will not pretend otherwise. Keithaar topped the list at 6.97/10, with Goal Exceeded breathing very close at 6.95/10 — two hundredths of a point between them. Dragon Of Malta came third at 6.84/10, Motazzen fourth at 6.81/10, Edwardtheninth fifth at 6.76/10, and Rum Diamond sixth at 6.71/10. What tipped the balance for Keithaar was not the composite margin alone — it was the combination of the highest raw market-move score against a price that still represents genuine value, a SR that clears its field by a meaningful margin, and a trainer who is currently running hot. Goal Exceeded had superior form figures and a sharper speed z-score, but its trainer's 4% 30-day strike rate is a cold bucket of water over an otherwise strong case.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Keithaar is the market-move score — the highest-weighted feature in the engine at 1.6, and it returned a raw score of +2.00 here, the maximum available, meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened the price with none drifting. That is not noise; that is a directional signal. The engine translates that into a market-implied edge of +77.3% — its estimated win probability is 35.5% against a market-implied 17.9%. I take that seriously at 4/1 (decimal 5.0). The speed feature adds weight: an SR of 150 against a field mean of 131.0 produces a z-score of +0.66, contributing +0.42 to the composite at speed's 1.5 weighting. The horse is meaningfully faster than its rivals on the figures, not marginally so. Marco Botti's recent form sharpens the trainer angle: 6 winners from 33 runners in the last 30 days is an 18% strike rate, which the engine flags as hot, adding +0.18 to the composite. That is not a headline number, but a hot trainer backing a steamer in a fillies' maiden is confluence worth noting.
The honest caveat on the feature set is that three of the seven features returned unavailable — form, class_change, and going all have no data on file. That is a significant absence. I am backing a market signal and a speed figure here, not a fully-rounded picture. The composite of 6.97/10 is solid territory — not the strong 8+ conviction I would want to feel fully at ease — and the margin over Goal Exceeded is thin enough that I want to be clear: this is a score-off decided by the market-move and trainer heat, not by dominant all-round form evidence.
What keeps me here rather than switching to Goal Exceeded is discipline: the weights exist for a reason, and market_move at 1.6 is the top-weighted feature precisely because market intelligence, when it fires cleanly and consistently, tends to be forward-looking in a way raw form figures are not. The money came in. Botti's yard is firing. The speed figure leads the field. On balance, Keithaar is the one.
What worries me
Three unavailable features in seven is a real gap — no form string, no class-change context, no going record. If the going has any softening effect not captured here, or if this filly simply does not handle the Southwell AW surface as expected, the speed figure means little. The field is a fillies' maiden, which by definition contains unexposed runners whose true ability is unknown — SR ratings in maiden fields carry more uncertainty than in handicaps. Goal Exceeded is only 0.02 points behind on composite and has a richer evidential base in speed and form; if the market was reading both horses simultaneously and simply liked Keithaar fractionally more, the gap at the line could easily go the other way. The engine conviction is flagged as MEDIUM — that is appropriate and I am not overriding it.
