Scores level, so the market decides — Crystal Spectre

Method

Five horses separated by less than two-tenths of a point at the top of the board — that is not a scoring race, that is a coin-toss, and when the model cannot separate them I let the market do the work. Today I scanned 40 races and 430 runners declared across the card. The filter pipeline applied four stages in sequence: odds band 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1); field size 6–14 runners (eliminating the noise of huge fields and the skew of tiny ones); race state verification; and a lay-of-day collision screen that removed 4 runners flagged by the opposing book. Feature weights in play were market_move at 1.6 (the heaviest), speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change at 1.0, trainer strike rate and going both at 0.8, and draw reserved for v2.

Today's universe

The day opened with 430 runners across 40 races. The odds-band filter cut that to 373, field-size trimmed it further to 280, and the lay-of-day collision screen took out another 4, leaving 276 runners going into composite scoring. The shortlist presented here is the top six from that surviving pool.

The shortlist

The top five composites are bunched within 0.20 points of each other — Wilful leads on 7.37/10, Legendary Luke sits at 7.30/10, Diamond Blue Point at 7.27/10, Crystal Spectre at 7.23/10, and Vrheligonne at 7.17/10. The gap between first and fourth is 0.14 — well below the 0.4 threshold that counts as a clear lead. When the engine cannot separate the field, the tiebreak rule is unambiguous: back the shortest price on the shortlist, the horse the market rates likeliest. That is Crystal Spectre at 11/8, not Wilful who tops the composite. Worth a mention at the other end: Magna Victor at 7/1 on a composite of 6.82/10 is the value outlier — published separately — with a market edge of +177.9% driven by a class drop of three rank positions.

Why this horse

The case for Crystal Spectre is built on the tiebreak, but the underlying score is not thin — 7.23/10 is solid, and the feature profile has genuine substance behind it. The market_move score is the maximum the engine awards: +2.00 on a weight of 1.6, meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened and none drifted. That is the loudest single signal in today's card, shared by every horse on this shortlist, which is precisely why it cannot separate them on its own. What Crystal Spectre adds is a form score of +1.50 from a recent string of '2-', decay-weighted to +1.00 for the latest finish, and a speed rating of SR 99 against a field mean of 88.8 (z = +0.88). Trainer Dan Skelton comes in at 19% over the last 30 days from 29/149 — that is a hot yard by the engine's reckoning, scored at +0.62.

What worries me

The risks here are real and I will not paper over them. Going is flagged UNAVAILABLE — Crystal Spectre has no career runs on good or adjacent going on record, so the surface assumption is unconfirmed. Class change is also UNAVAILABLE, meaning there is no prior recognised class to benchmark today's Class 5 contest against. The form string is short — '2-' is two entries, which gives the decay model almost nothing to work with. The market edge is negative (-12.8%), so I am not backing this because the price is wrong in my favour; I am backing it because the scores are locked and the market is the tiebreaker. If Wilful — who genuinely tops the composite at 7.37/10 with an SR of 158 against a field mean of 128.0 and a confirmed steamer read — runs to its rating, it is the better-modelled horse. Crystal Spectre wins the selection on process, not on dominance.
