Method
Five horses finishing within a third of a point of each other is not a clean signal; it is a coin toss dressed up as analysis, and today I am not pretending otherwise. What I scanned today were the 45 declared races across the card, running the engine across 486 runners through a four-stage filter pipeline: first stripping abandoned or already-resulted races (none dropped), then applying the odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal — no odds-on, no 50/1 shots — which cut the field to 418, then a field-size gate of 6–14 runners to avoid small-field noise and big-field chaos, landing on 290, and finally a single LoD collision drop leaving 289 runners in contention. Feature weights in play: market_move leads at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going both at 0.8, trainer_strike at 0.8, draw held at 0.5 pending v2 build.
Today's universe
The day opened with 45 races and 486 runners. The odds-band filter removed 68 runners (odds-on and 50/1+). The field-size gate cleared out another 128, keeping only races between 6 and 14 declared runners. One runner was dropped at the LoD collision stage. That left 289 qualified runners going into scoring — a tight, manageable pool. Six horses made it onto the scored shortlist above a composite of 7.0/10.
The shortlist
The top six compressed into a band of just 0.46 composite points — from Pure Power at 7.47/10 down to Golspie at 7.01/10. Pure Power leads the scoring, driven almost entirely by a hard market move and a speed rating of SR 152 against a field mean of 123.9 — but form and going are both UNAVAILABLE, which leaves two of the bigger weighted features blank. Minella Rockett at 7.14/10 has the strongest form string on the shortlist and a clean going record, but trainer John Nallen is 0/9 over 30 days — a cold yard dragging on a Listed race. Nermal at 7.09/10 steamed in too, with speed and a workable form string, but class data is unrecognised at Dundalk. Magika Bella at 7.08/10 is the value outlier at 6/1 with a market edge of +151.9%, but Ben Pauling is running at 3% over 30 days and going data is a blank. The scores cannot separate the top five by the 0.4-point threshold the engine requires to call a clear winner — so when the scores are level, the tiebreak is price: the shortest-priced horse on the shortlist is the one the market rates most likely to win.
Why this horse
Aegean Prince is not the top-scoring horse today — Pure Power holds that position at 7.47/10. The engine's rule is plain: when no composite leads by 0.4 or more, the bet falls to the shortest-priced qualifier, and Aegean Prince at 1/1 (decimal 2.0) is that horse. The market is doing the separating where the model cannot. The feature picture beneath the composite is, in fact, one of the most complete on the shortlist. Speed comes in at SR 120 against a field mean of 101.4 — a z-score of +0.88, solid rather than spectacular. Form reads '1/12-1' with a decay-weighted average of +1.73, the most substantial recent-form reading of any horse in the top five. Going is a clean 2-from-2 on good to soft or adjacent — he has handled this ground before and won on it. Trainer Charlie Appleby is running at 22% over 30 days from 11/49 — the hottest yard on the shortlist by some distance. Class is the one knock: he is rising from rank 3 to rank 2, a delta of -1, which trimmed the composite by -0.60. That is a real cost. The market move is still a steamer — the majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted.
What worries me
The class-rise penalty is not cosmetic — Aegean Prince steps up into a Group 3 at Newmarket and the engine docked him -0.60 for it. His market edge is actually negative at -28.2%, meaning the model's estimated win probability of 35.9% sits below the market-implied 44.6% — the field here knows something about this horse's ceiling. The scores across the top of the shortlist are genuinely level, and on a different day the tiebreak could just as easily have favoured Pure Power (the actual top score at 7.47/10) or Minella Rockett (7.14/10, strong form, good going record). If the ground rides softer than declared good-to-soft, going data gives him a pass — but that is a thin cushion. This is ENGINE CONVICTION: MEDIUM for a reason, and the method that produced this selection is a tiebreaker, not a dominant signal. Magika Bella at 6/1 is published separately as today's value pick — the +151.9% market edge is the biggest number on the card, for those chasing a longer return.
