Browse the logbookMarket decides when the scores won't: Bailly's Comet at 7/4
Method
When the engine can't split the field, the market gets the casting vote — and today, that is exactly where we are. I scanned all 30 races declared for 2 November 2026, applying an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing bigger than 49/1), a field-size window of 6–14 runners (tight enough to matter, loose enough to breathe), and a weighted feature model that puts market movement at the top of the tree — market_move carries a weight of 1.6, ahead of speed at 1.5 and form at 1.2. Class change, trainer strike rate, and going each contribute at 1.0, 0.8, and 0.8 respectively. Draw bias is reserved for v2 and is unavailable across the board today.
Today's universe
The day opened with 284 runners across 30 races. The odds filter trimmed that to 252 — removing odds-on runners and anything priced beyond 49/1. The field-size cut brought it to 248, and a final pass dropping runners the lay-of-day model is opposing removed 2 more, leaving 246 runners in the live universe. That is the pool the composite scores were built from.
The shortlist
Five horses separated themselves clearly enough to name. Tommie Beau led the board on 7.05/10 — driven hardest by a market move score of +0.77, an SR of 131 against a field mean of 124.8, and a class drop that added +0.90. Seamus Mullins is running at 21% over 30 days which is firmly hot. Second was Bailly's Comet at 6.93/10, with A Lott of Kane on 6.92/10 — half a hundredth behind, effectively level. Two Commanders scored 6.75/10 and Shes Got The Blues 6.62/10. The gap between first and second — 0.12 points — is well inside the 0.4 threshold that would count as a clear lead. With scores this compressed, the engine does not force the top composite into the selection slot. Instead it hands the decision to the market: the shortest-priced qualifier on the shortlist gets the nod, and that is Bailly's Comet at 7/4. Tommie Beau remains the value pick at 9/2 and is published separately for those who want the longer price.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Bailly's Comet is the speed figure. An SR of 158 against a field mean of 138.1 — a z-score of +1.23 — is the standout number in this Plumpton maiden hurdle over 2m4f116y. That is not a marginal edge; it is a horse operating at a different ceiling to most of what it faces. The speed weight in the model is 1.5, the second-highest in the framework, and Bailly's Comet earns +1.23 on it. The market move adds the other pillar: a strict majority of bookies shortened, none drifted — maximum score, +2.00 on the 1.6 weight. That is the kind of uniform directional move that suggests someone with better information than me has already put their money down.
The form string — '139-' — is not pretty in isolation, but the decay-weighted model scores the most recent finish (a win) at +0.25 after adjusting for recency, and the composite form score lands at +0.38. Anthony Honeyball is running at 18% over 30 days, which the model tags as hot, contributing +0.52 on the trainer-strike feature. That is a solid supporting cast behind the two headline numbers.
The going and class-change features are both unavailable — no career runs on good or adjacent ground on record, and no prior races with a recognised class to compare. That means roughly two features that could have added further confidence are simply absent. The composite of 6.93/10 is therefore built on fewer pillars than Tommie Beau's 7.05/10. The selection is not the strongest case I have seen — it is the market's preferred horse from a shortlist the model cannot separate. I am following the shortest price because that is what the protocol calls for when the scores converge, not because Bailly's Comet has dominated the analysis.
What worries me
The two missing features are the obvious starting point: going form is entirely absent, which means I cannot say how this horse handles good ground — only that it has not been tested on it in any recorded run. Class-change data is also unavailable, so there is no read on whether today's assignment represents a step up, a step down, or lateral movement. If those gaps are hiding a problem, the model cannot see it. The market implied probability is 32.5% — Bailly's Comet is not an obvious overlay at 7/4; the model's estimated win probability of 35.3% gives an edge of just -3.0%, which is essentially flat to marginally negative on raw value grounds. The engine conviction is flagged at MEDIUM and I am not going to dress that up. The selection is the product of a tiebreak, not a dominant case. Tommie Beau at 9/2 carries the stronger composite and meaningful positive edge at +97.1% — readers who want the value argument should look there.
