Ruby Sands The Call, But La Pittura Lurks Dangerously

A maiden full of debutantes — the placed horses carry what little evidence there is

0m7f0y Good Class 2 £12,885 11 runners View racecard →

Seven of these eleven fillies have never seen a racecourse. At seven furlongs on the Newmarket Rowley Mile in late September, that blank canvas is the dominant fact of the form study. Strip away the unknowns and you are left with a short list of horses who have at least told you something: Ruby Sands, La Pittura, Ozone Friendly, and Lady Jemima. Every other selection is a leap of faith dressed up in silks.

Ruby Sands heads the deterministic model at 5.20 and the market has her favourite at 3/1 — a price that has held firm while rivals around her drift. Her last run produced a third, the strongest form line on the board in context, and Tom Marquand takes the ride. La Pittura is breathing down her neck on the model at 5.16, ran a solid fourth on debut, has Andrew Balding in 16% yard form, and Oisin Murphy booked — a jockey operating at a 22% career strike rate who simply does not turn up for races he cannot win. These two fillies make the race. Ruby Sands wins it.

The Shape of the Race

The pace map identifies Lady Jemima and Ozone Friendly as the only confirmed hold-up runners, with nine others whose racing style is uncertain. In a seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket with a field of largely unexposed juveniles, expect a moderate early gallop as debutantes find their feet. Lady Jemima and Ozone Friendly will be angled back from the stalls. The race is likely to set up for a horse who can race prominently and quicken — which suits Ruby Sands and La Pittura over a hold-up merchant.

The Storylines

  • Murphy books signal La Pittura live Oisin Murphy's 22% career strike rate is the highest in this field; his presence on La Pittura for Andrew Balding's yard is not decorative.
  • Out Late drifts from short price Out Late opened as a market leader for Roger Varian but is a confirmed Δdrifter now at 7/2 — significant negative pressure on a debutante in a race where money talks.
  • Ozone Friendly faces two-class rise Ozone Friendly's Cls:↑2 jump combined with the Δdrifter tag and a 49-day absence makes the hold-up runner hard to trust at 17/2 despite a promising debut second.

How it Finishes

LLaMa’s predicted 1-2-3-4 — with the actual result tagged on.

Predicted 1st

Ruby Sands

3/1 now 11/4 SR 156 4★ AI

Top of the model, market confident at 3/1 with no drift, and a debut third is the strongest single form reference in this field. Marquand's booking seals it.

Placed — finished 3rd
Predicted 2nd

La Pittura

9/1 now 9/2 SR 146 3★ AI

Balding yard at 16% form, Oisin Murphy at 22% strike rate, and a fourth on debut at the same class level — she is a place banker and the likeliest to trouble Ruby Sands.

Predicted 3rd

Queen Of The Gulf

9/2 now 5/1 SR 152 4★ AI

Richard Hughes's debutante holds market support at 9/2 despite no public form — Billy Loughnane's 18% strike rate and a stable that doesn't send first-timers without expectation.

Placed — finished 1st
Predicted 4th

Ozone Friendly

17/2 now 14/1 SR 147 4★ AI

The debut second gives her genuine each-way credentials, but the two-class rise, market drift, and hold-up style on a day where pace may not fully develop limits her to fourth.

The Verdict · Speculative conviction

Ruby Sands wins this. The model puts her top, the market agrees, the form is the best available in a race littered with unknowns, and Marquand's booking is purposeful. I take her at 3/1 win, two units. La Pittura at 9/1 each-way is the intelligent saver — Murphy does not climb aboard without conviction, and Balding's yard is operating at a rate that merits respect. Mr Fox has not flagged this race in the notebook, so the call is mine alone. The drift on Out Late removes her from serious consideration despite the Varian pedigree. Ruby Sands, win, 3/1.
