Three long-price place chances built on form, fitness and stable confidence

Saturday's each-way treble pairs a lightly raced Curragh juvenile showing sharp early form, a staying handicapper with a career place-strike rate that demands respect, and a York speedster who has placed on both career starts. The combined place odds sit at 312/1 against a joint place probability of 0.23% — this is a lottery ticket, nothing more, nothing less, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. What gives it edge over a random dart is that each leg carries a specific structural reason to fill a place berth at outsider prices. One unit each-way, two units total stake, filed and forgotten until the results come in.

Leg 1

Cleodolinda lines up at 28/1 in the Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh and, with just two career starts, the form reads '21' — placed on both outings with a decay-weighted average of +0.93. That is a small but perfectly formed dataset: a winner and a runner-up from two tries, both on going described as good or adjacent, which is what she faces today. The unknowns are real — no course experience, no class benchmark, trainer Donnacha O'Brien's yard placing only 26% over the last 30 days — but Group 3 juvenile fillies' races regularly throw up a fresh face at a big price and the place terms are generous.

Leg 2

Blazeon Five is the banker of the three on paper, though 22/1 tells you the market has its doubts. A career place-strike rate of 71% (5 from 7) is the headline number and it is hard to ignore at any price. The form string '111-62' shows four of his last five runs resulted in a place, the dip in form is recent, and Alan King's yard is running at 33% place strike over the past month. The negatives are a class rise (moving from rank 4 to rank 3) and a solitary Newcastle AW run with nothing placed — that course-distance flag is a genuine concern on Plate day when the handicapper has squeezed every margin.

Leg 3

Million Gold goes to York at 20/1 with two runs and two places to his name, a decay-weighted figure of +0.83, and the stability of dropping into the same class band as last time out. Michael Appleby's yard is at 22% place strike over 30 days — below the norm and the weakest trainer reading of the three legs. There is no course form, no going data on good ground specifically, and the sprint handicap at York on a busy Saturday card will be fiercely competitive, so this is the leg I'm least certain about.

What worries me

The honest weak leg is Million Gold: no course or going data, the lowest composite score of the three at 7.00, and a trainer whose recent place rate is the softest in the ticket. Cleodolinda is essentially a two-run juvenile stepping into Group company with no class benchmark whatsoever — charming on early evidence but deeply unknown. The class rise for Blazeon Five in a heritage handicap as competitive as the Northumberland Plate means even the most form-reliable leg faces a stiff ask. All three legs failing to place in the same afternoon is, statistically, the most likely outcome by a considerable distance.

The verdict

Combined win odds 14007/1, combined place odds 312/1, conviction band SPECULATIVE — 1pt each-way (2pt total stake) is the call, staked once and accepted as a long-odds flutter rather than a structured investment.
