Method
The nurseries at York in July have a way of producing one horse the market has quietly decided — and today that horse is Furturra. The engine scanned all 57 declared races on 11 July 2026, applying an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on shots, nothing at 49/1 or beyond), and a field-size gate of 6–14 runners — tight enough to be meaningful, loose enough to include competitive handicaps. Feature weights were leaded toward market movement (1.6) and speed (1.5), with form at 1.2; class change and going sharing 0.8–1.0 territory; draw data is not yet available, reserved for v2 of the engine.
Today's universe
The day opened with 57 races and 557 runners. The odds filter trimmed 47 runners — odds-on shots and 50/1-plus outsiders both cut — leaving 510. The field-size gate then removed races smaller than 6 or larger than 14 runners, bringing the working pool to 378 runners across a tighter set of competitive contests. That is the universe the composite scoring ran across.
The shortlist
Five horses separated themselves clearly, with a sixth just behind. Furturra topped the board at 7.29/10. More Thunder came in second at 7.15/10 — strong speed figures and a genuine steamer, but priced at 11/10 decimal (2.1), which sits barely inside the odds band and carries negative edge at -23.7% against market implied. Boston Max scored 7.04/10 with the biggest market move raw score, but the going record is a single run with no win and the class feature was unavailable. Cape Fear at 7.01/10 is well-fancied at 6/4 but the edge is essentially flat at -10.9% — the market has already priced it accurately. Undiscovered at 6.97/10 has a form score of +3.00 but is rising two class ranks and has no going data on good to firm at all. What tipped Furturra clear of the field was the combination of a +2.00 market move, a +122.0% positive edge against market-implied probability, and a speed rating of SR 89 against a field mean of 76.0 — those three features, weighted at 1.6, 1.5 and 1.2 respectively, did the damage.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Furturra is the market signal. This is not a borderline steamer — the engine logged a strict majority of bookmakers shortening, none drifting, which yields the maximum market-move score of +2.00 on a weight of 1.6. Combined with an estimated win probability of 37.0% against a market-implied 14.9%, that is a +122.0% edge — the widest gap on today's entire shortlist by some distance. When a Class 4 nursery at York at 5/1 is attracting that kind of one-way money, the form students and the price-layers are not agreeing, and I back the form students here. The speed case is solid rather than spectacular: SR 89 against a field mean of 76.0, a z-score of +1.07. That is not a horse blowing the field away on raw figures, but it is a horse with a meaningful edge in a 6f nursery where the pace dynamics are usually brutal for anything without early zip. The form string '231212' with a decay-weighted average of +1.33 on the latest run tells me this is a horse finding its feet and coming right — dropping in class today (rank 5 today versus rank 3 last time out, a delta of +2) adds another layer. Tim Easterby's 10% strike rate over the last 30 days is on-par rather than hot, so I am not leaning on the trainer angle, but the yard is not a negative here either.
What worries me
The honest risks are real. Going data is only 2-from-8 on good to firm or adjacent, with 6 placed — that is a horse who shows up on this ground without dominating it. The draw is entirely unavailable; in a 6f York sprint the stall position can matter, and I am flying blind there. More Thunder at Ascot is the classiest horse on the shortlist and also steamered — if you are looking for where the sharpest money is at a Group 2 level, that race could be pulling liquidity away from the nursery. The composite lead over the runner-up is 0.14 points — solid, but not a runaway, and the engine conviction is set at MEDIUM for a reason. A late going correction toward good or softer would not necessarily harm Furturra on the form profile, but any step toward good to soft introduces uncertainty on a horse whose best figures have come on faster ground.
