The market kept coming back to Tamara Jane

Method

On a day when every horse on the shortlist is steaming, the edge has to come from somewhere other than the move itself — and that somewhere is price. The engine scanned today's card applying an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (evens to 49/1, no odds-on runners considered), a field-size window of 6–14 declared runners, and a seven-feature weighting model led by market_move at 1.6, speed at 1.5, and form at 1.2. The lay-of-day collision filter then stripped a further three runners before scoring began, leaving a clean pool to rank.

Today's universe

The day opened with 48 races and 440 runners. The odds band cut that to 386; field-size trimmed it further to 337; the lay-of-day collision filter removed three more to leave 334 runners entering the composite scoring stage. That is the pool from which the shortlist was drawn.

The shortlist

Six horses cleared the threshold. Tamara Jane topped the board at 7.34/10, edging Tutu Twist on 7.30 by a margin I would call meaningful in isolation but narrow enough to examine. Rose Moon followed at 7.08, then Sharadd and Bud Fox level on 6.93, with Rokanako sixth at 6.71. What separated the top two was not speed — Tutu Twist actually holds a superior SR — but the market edge calculation. Tutu Twist is priced at 11/8, which erases nearly all implied edge (-12.0% against the engine's estimate), whereas Tamara Jane at 3/1 generates a genuine gap between model probability and market implied — +48.9% — and that is the number that tipped the balance.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to with Tamara Jane is that the market_move signal is as clean as it gets. The score logs a +2.00 on the market_move feature — a strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted — and at 3/1 the price has not collapsed to the point where the value is gone. The engine's estimated win probability sits at 37.2% against a market-implied 22.3%, an edge of +48.9%. That gap is the largest on today's shortlist by some distance, and it is the primary reason Tamara Jane holds the top composite of 7.34/10. The speed feature supports it independently: an SR of 95 against a field mean of 73.9 produces a z-score of +1.38, worth +0.80 to the composite after weighting at 1.5. That is a solid differential in a mares' bumper over 2m3f at Kilbeggan. The form read adds a modest +0.29 — the string 'U51-34' contains a win and the decay-weighted average is positive at +0.42 for the most recent first-place finish, though the U (unseated) in the sequence is noted and the form is not clean. Taken together, speed and market move are doing the heavy lifting, and both are pointing in the same direction.

What worries me

Several features are unavailable and that matters: class_change is unscored because today's race class is unrecognised, trainer strike rate falls below the noise threshold of five runners in 30 days so cannot be assessed, going is a blank because Tamara Jane has no career runs on good or adjacent going on record, and draw bias is reserved for v2. That is a lot of unknowns for a 7.34 composite that is driven substantially by two features. The form string includes an unseated rider and the sequence 'U51-34' is not the profile of a horse running in top gear. The composite lead over Tutu Twist is only 0.04 points — marginal on any reasonable read — and Tutu Twist carries the superior SR rating of 158. If the Kilbeggan ground comes up softer than declared good, or if the mares' bumper pace is messy, the speed edge could matter less than the raw ratings suggest. This is a MEDIUM conviction call and it should be treated as one.
