Method
A horse that clears every filter by a margin and then gets steamed by the books is the read I keep coming back to — that is the story of this Saturday. The engine scanned all 135 runners declared across 13 races today, working through a four-stage filter pipeline. Stage one preserved all 135 after removing any abandoned or already-resulted races. Stage two applied the odds band — decimal 2.0 to 50.0, ruling out odds-on favourites and longshots beyond 49/1 — cutting the field to 119. Stage three kept only runners in races of 6 to 14 declared runners, trimming to 42: small fields are noisy, big fields are chaos. Stage four dropped 1 runner flagged by the Lay of the Day collision check, leaving 41 runners eligible for scoring. Feature weights ran as follows: market_move at 1.6 (heaviest), speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going both at 1.0 and 0.8 respectively, trainer_strike at 0.8, draw reserved for v2 and unavailable across the board.
Today's universe
Today started with 135 runners in 13 races. After the odds band filter removed the odds-on runners and the field-size filter stripped out the small and oversized fields, 42 runners survived into the scoring pool. One further runner was removed by the Lay of the Day collision check, leaving a clean eligible universe of 41 runners ranked by composite score.
The shortlist
The top of the board separates into two clear tiers. High Fibre sits clear at 7.13/10, driven by a speed score that nothing else in the shortlist touches and a confirmed market steam. Uptoyourselves comes second at 6.84/10 but carries three unavailable features — going, trainer strike rate, and class change — which leaves material uncertainty in that composite. Double Rush scores 6.78/10 in a Listed race at York with solid form and a genuine steam, but its speed edge over the field is narrower. Extremely Zain at 6.54/10 posts the widest market edge of the shortlist at +100.4% implied versus market, and William Haggas's 18% strike rate is hot, but the composite sits below the top two. County Champs at 6.19/10 and Jefe Triunfo at 5.98/10 both benefit from a hot trainer in Chris Gordon but Jefe Triunfo carries a negative form score and County Champs has no winning form on good or adjacent going. The gap between first and second — 7.13 versus 6.84 — is meaningful when the runner-up has three feature holes. Speed and market confirmation tipped the balance firmly toward High Fibre.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with High Fibre is the speed figure. An SR of 94 against a field mean of 68.6 produces a z-score of +2.49 — that is not a marginal edge, that is a horse running at a measurably different level to most of what it faces in the York 14:40 Hanson Springs Stayers Handicap over 2m0f56y. Speed is the highest-weighted feature after market move, and this score drives the composite harder than anything else in the shortlist. The weighted speed contribution alone is +0.90, the single largest top-driver figure across all six shortlisted horses. I had a long look at whether anything could close that gap, and nothing in the field at this price can.
The market confirmation matters just as much. High Fibre is a confirmed steamer — a strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted. That pushes the market_move feature to +2.00 at a weight of 1.6, the maximum score on the heaviest feature in the model. The engine's estimated win probability is 36.2% against a market-implied 27.5%, an edge of +17.7%. When the model and the money are pointing in the same direction on good going at York, I back the signal. The going feature adds +1.00 on the back of 2-from-4 with three placed runs on good or adjacent ground — this horse has form in the conditions it meets today.
Form reads '806/31', and the decay-weighted average on the latest win comes in at +0.62 — solid rather than spectacular, but the trend is the right way: the two most recent runs show a third and a first. Trainer James Owen posts 11% over 88 runners in the last 30 days, which the model rates on par and scores fractionally negative at -0.05. That is the one mild drag on the composite, and it is barely worth noting alongside the speed and market signals. Class is unchanged from last time out. The overall composite of 7.13/10 is a strong read by the model's own scale — anything above 8 is very strong, but 7.13 with the specific combination of dominant speed and market steam is more compelling than a 7.13 built on softer foundations.
What worries me
The honest risks here are real if contained. The draw feature is unavailable across the board — v2 hasn't been built yet — and over 2m0f56y at York draw matters less than in sprint handicaps, but it is a hole in the data nonetheless. Form reads '806/31' which includes an eighth and a sixth in that sequence: this horse is not a model of consistency, and the decay weighting flatters the most recent win. If the ground moves softer through the morning — the going is currently Good — the going score of +1.00 was built on good or adjacent conditions and any deterioration introduces uncertainty. Uptoyourselves at the same odds and Double Rush with a 6.78/10 composite and clean Listed form are both in the market at similar prices, so there is genuine competition for punter money at the top of the card today. The composite gap is real but not enormous — 7.13 versus 6.84 — and anyone wanting to split stakes between High Fibre and Double Rush has a reasonable argument. I am going with the speed figure and the steam.
