Fallacious Promise steamers into pole at Lingfield

Method

A market that speaks this clearly on a Monday evening is doing half the work for you — the read I keep coming back to today is that the two heaviest signals in the engine both point the same way, and both point at the same horse. Today's scan covered all declared racing for Saturday 6 July 2026. The filter pipeline opened with the full declared field of 399 runners across 35 races, stripped odds-on runners and anything priced above 50.0 decimal (the odds band runs from 2.0 to 50.0 decimal), then removed races outside the 6-to-14 runner field-size window — small fields are noisy, big fields are chaos, as the config puts it. That left 257 runners in the live universe. Composite scores were built using seven weighted features: market_move carries the heaviest load at 1.6, speed sits at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going each at 1.0 and 0.8 respectively, trainer strike rate at 0.8, and draw at 0.5 — though draw remains unavailable across the board, reserved for v2.

Today's universe

The day started with 35 races and 399 runners declared. The odds-band filter cut 43 runners — mostly odds-on favourites — bringing the pool to 356. The field-size filter then removed another 99 runners from races either too small or too large to produce clean signal, leaving a working universe of 257 runners across the relevant card. Every composite on the shortlist was built from that pool.

The shortlist

The top six by composite are Fallacious Promise (7.02/10), Glorious Kitty (6.88/10), Midnight Media (6.83/10), Dyrholaey (6.81/10), Slack Bob (6.80/10), and Rumbustious (6.62/10). Positions two through five are separated by just 0.08 composite points — that cluster is genuinely tight and I want to be honest about it. What pushed Fallacious Promise clear of the pack is the same market_move signal every runner on this list carries, but stacked on top of a speed figure that z-scores higher relative to its field than most, combined with a trainer who is running visibly hot right now. The gap to Glorious Kitty is 0.14 points — meaningful but not commanding.

Why this horse

The engine conviction is MEDIUM and the composite is 7.02/10 — that is a solid score, not a blowout, and the 0.14-point margin over Glorious Kitty is the first thing I'd ask a sceptic to sit with. But here is what tips it. The market_move score is +2.00 — the maximum available from that feature, which carries the engine's highest weight at 1.6. A strict majority of bookmakers shortened on Fallacious Promise and none drifted. That is not a whisper; that is a chorus. At 11/8 the horse is already short, and the money still came in. That behaviour at that price tells you something about who is backing it and why.

On top of that, the speed figure is the story the market may already know. An SR of 64 against a field mean of 43.6 gives a z-score of +1.72 — that is the raw ability gap that class-six rivals at Lingfield on an all-weather Monday evening will need to bridge. John Butler's yard is running at 23% over the last 30 days from 10 wins out of 44 runners — the research_log flags that as hot, and the trainer_strike feature scores +0.89 as a result. Recent form reads '5-9223' with the latest run scoring a decay-weighted +0.51 — not a blaze of recent brilliance, but the direction is acceptable and the market is not looking at that string and running away.

The one feature I cannot lean on is going. There are no career runs on good or adjacent going in the data, so that feature returns unavailable. On an all-weather surface at Lingfield this is less alarming than it would be on turf — the track conditions are relatively standardised — but it is a genuine gap in the evidence and I am recording it as such.

What worries me

The going data is the cleanest risk to articulate: Fallacious Promise has no logged career runs on good or adjacent going, so we are flying blind on that feature. Lingfield AW softens the concern compared to a turf surface but does not eliminate it entirely. The negative market edge is the second flag — the engine's estimated win probability is 35.7% against a market-implied 37.6%, giving an edge of -15.2%. The model does not like the price relative to its own assessment of raw probability; the horse is the top composite score despite sitting in negative edge territory, which means it is the market_move weight doing heavy lifting. If the late money was information-driven that is fine; if it was crowd behaviour at a short-priced favourite, it is not. Glorious Kitty at 3/1 carries a +40.1% positive edge and has a cleaner form string — any punter who wants to argue for that one has a reasonable case. Draw bias data is also unavailable engine-wide, so any draw effects at Lingfield over one mile and one yard are unaccounted for.
