Sly Man's Horses to Watch — Thursday 1 October 2026
Nothing shorter than 5/1 makes my book. I'm looking beyond the obvious — but they still have to earn their place.
Five worth watching today. Read the rating, read the angle, then make up your own mind. I'm the wiry one in the silks reading form on a tablet while the favourites warm up — here's what's caught my eye.
Avebury Ring
James Doyle is firing at 30% over the last 30 days and somebody in the know has been loading up on Avebury Ring — the market's moved in one direction only. Top SR on the card at 149, and that combination of a hot jockey and quiet market support at 7/1 is exactly what gets a horse onto this watchlist.
- James Doyle — 30% strike rate last 30d (14/46)
- Money coming — strict-majority steamer, no drifters
- SR 149 — top of the card
Regional Rock is running at an SR of 89 — nudging past his own career best of 87 — and four independent signals are pointing the same direction at once, which doesn't happen often. Beckett's yard is firing at 20% over the last 30 days, Hector Crouch takes the ride, and 11/2 looks workable for something this well-aligned.
- SR 89 — near career best (87)
- 4 independent signals aligned
- Ralph Beckett — 20% strike rate last 30d (20/98)
Five wins at Southwell before today and he walks in here on the back of two straight — the SR of 122 tops the entire card, and 6/1 is a gift for a horse this comfortable on the track. Freddie Keighley keeps the ride in the family and that continuity matters when a horse is in this kind of groove.
- SR 122 — top of the card
- Won last 2 starts
- 5 prior wins at Southwell
Money is moving on Secret Rock in a market where every signal points one way — strict-majority steamer, no drifters, and that's not noise at 11/1. W. J. Lee at 15% over the last 30 days, Collins firing at the same clip from a smaller yard — both live, and someone clearly knows it.
- Money coming — strict-majority steamer, no drifters
- W. J. Lee — 15% strike rate last 30d (17/112)
- Cian Collins — 15% strike rate last 30d (3/20)
Money is moving on Sneddy Eddie with purpose — strict-majority steamer, no drifters, which at 9/1 is worth sitting up for. He's already won at Bellewstown, and Elliott's yard doesn't send horses here to make up numbers.
- Money coming — strict-majority steamer, no drifters
- 1 prior win at Bellewstown
